My favorite peice of gear I have ever tried : Korg Kaossilator Pro Tabletop Synthesizer
I will admit, I've never been a big MIDI user; if I have to access sub-menus to change MIDI modes then I loose interest, unplug the MIDI and just experiment raw. I'm addressing a bit of the cons first here. Syncopation issues are the biggest problem with this unit. It works so hard to keep it's sampled pads in synch with each other, that it fails to provide ample tools for syncing this device to nearly any other (including other Korg devices).
For instance, I can sample a drum loop on this unit, then run the audio line to my KP3 and resample the same loop at the same tempo on my KP3. Then turn off the original loop on the Kaossilator pro, and in a matter of seconds when you turn the Kaossilator loop back on it will already be out of sync with the exact same loop sampled at the same tempo in the same brand's similar device. Notice however, that I am NOT taking off a star for this.
I am also NOT removing a star for the ridiculously short loop time. That does not mean that these are not serious issues that deserve to be deal-breakers for a lot of people based on specifc ways they want to use this, but it means that for this price I would expect Korg to cut a lot more corners.
Now for the pros to justify all five stars. This unit is wildly affordable, as I said, as a completely new type of sampler, or as a sound module, much less for both together. What makes the sampling unique could be considered a weakness by people who refuse to try a new process for loop making. This is because the four banks are always looping. The buttons do not cue-up the loop you just made from the beginning, but instead mute and un-mute it from wherever it happens to be.
As a stand-alone unit, or a part of a MIDI chain, these shortcomings are real, but you can make some amazingly quick and unique drum and simple-note basslines to sample into a more traditional sampler, and the sounds used to make these are not the typical generic stuff seen in this price range. The low end will really shake the hell out of your subwoofers, and if you can keep your hyper fingers stable then you can make some sweet synth lines with a unique approach to arpeggio and pre-integrated filters. This is a great unit to build freeform material for a more trigger-based or long-playing sampler.
This is also a great unit to get people's attention on stage. The tones are sharp and rich and often wild and eccentric (especially if you get too giddy with the touch screen). I like to send my audio output through the KP3 to the Roland SP404SX. I build some short beat parts on the Kaossilator Pro, resample them longer with some melodic accents on the KP3, and then complete the composition in a performance-like manner while sampling at full length on the SP404SX. This has provided me endless possibilities, and a piece of gear I hope to have for the rest of my life.
If you want something unique to give you new angles, this is it. You can stack sounds on each button infinitely with no sound loss. Occasionally it will sample a snippet when you didn't ask it to, and really that's a malfunction, but I use all of this units flaws to my advantage as an experimental songwriter who is accustomed to all gear having ticks, glitches, and shortcomings that I always integrate and accept in my process.
This is not like other gear. There is nothing to compare it to even in the Kaoss series, really. Try it.
